The History of Halloween
Halloween is derived from "All Hallows Eve", or: All Saints Eve. The Celtic calendar always started the year of November 1, and therefore October 31 was New Year's Eve for the Celts. The harvest was in and everything was ready to start the next Celtic New Year (also called Samhain). The Celts believed that on Halloween day the ghosts of all the people who had died the year before would return and try to take possession of a living person. These spirits could be attracted by putting food at the door, and you could ward off the evil spirits by wearing Celtic masks. When the Romans took over the Celts in Great Britain, they mixed the Celtic tradition with their own; for them was that time to celebrate the harvest and honor the dead.
Where do pumpkins and trick or treat come from?
When the Christian use of All Souls' Day was also mixed with it in the 9th century, the 'trick-or-treat' journey originated. On All Souls' Day, the Christians went around the villages in rags to beg for bread with currants. For every loaf they received, they promised to pray to hasten deliverance for the giver from the temporary punishments of purgatory (and thus get to heaven faster). In the second half of the 19th century, Halloween was especially popular in the United States. With all the Irish and Scottish immigrants who populated the country, Halloween became increasingly popular there and taken over by the rest of the inhabitants of the "new land". During that time also the jack-o'-lantern on; this is the hollowed-out pumpkin that has become the most famous icon representing Halloween today. Initially, Halloween was still mainly a children's party. The children dressed up for sweets, the trick-or-treat and the scare and scare began to gain in popularity. Slowly in the 80s, it started to become more and more a party for adults. The creepy, the decoration, and the costumes made Halloween very popular among many. In recent years it has come back to Europe and has started a real advance here.
Halloween in the Netherlands
The Halloween party and All Saints' Day are getting more and more attention in the Netherlands and Belgium. Children go to the doors to pick up sweets, there are more and more fancy Halloween parties in cafes, at people's homes, and in discotheques. And there are more and more people who are making their homes creepy. Many primary schools organize a dress-up afternoon with a trick-or-treat round and amusement parks and youth hostels are also increasingly celebrating Halloween.
In 2018, a scientific study showed that more than half of people in the Netherlands celebrate Halloween. In some provinces of the Netherlands, especially those of Roman Catholic origin, St. Martin is preferred to be celebrated on November 11, where candy is also picked up from the doors. Nevertheless, the popularity of Saint Maarten is declining while Halloween appears to be increasingly popular.
