Dutch History
That is a long history, so there are a lot of pictures of it. A few interesting photos of Jos-Pe, including 'Castricum aan zee', with those wooden fold-out beach chairs, seen from the back. There is a whole series from this photographer, which is worth a closer look. Like the photo of a windmill, 'Egmond aan den Hoef'. Or that of a lighthouse, with cows grazing in the foreground, called 'Huisduinen'. That the beach and sea were great sources of inspiration for this photographer is evident from other photos, such as those of the colony house, the children standing hand in hand in a circle on the beach, the path to the beach in Callantsoog, that of a ship in Den Helder, but there is also just a photo of the town of Den Helder. There are also many photos of buildings, such as a church, of places by the sea. These photos originate from the 1950's and 1960's of the last century.
Even further back in time, a photo of an old farmhouse, with a characteristic roof, cascading, a real nostalgic picture. An image of an inn, surrounded by trees, comes from the same period, a beautiful image. It really is a Dutch picture of the cheese market in Alkmaar, it dates from the 1960s, so again from a somewhat later date. There are several pictures of the cheese market in this city, from different photographers.
Emiel van Moerkerken
If there is a lot of diversity, it is van Moerkerken. During the 20th century, he made very nostalgic pictures, but also modern ones. Whichever way you look at it, life is depicted, its versatility, but also the changes of time.
A very endearing picture is of a midwife in training with a newborn baby in her hands. From the same year, there is also a picture of an apprentice nurse wearing the classic uniform. A young woman playing the harp, a student from the conservatory, also one from a student from the training school, and one from the drama school. It is striking that they are all women.
These are of course classic pictures, but things can be very different from van Moerkerken. Like with a card entitled 'lunch break in the Jordaan', with women with wide skirts, who seem to dance, in front of an eatery, a very cheerful picture, for example, suitable as a birthday card. Van Moerkerken also has pictures of members of the royal family, like those of Beatrix when she was still a princess. Also from writers, like Jan Wolkers, from Gerard Reve, even from Annie M.G. Schmidt.
There are also pictures of Amsterdam, such as the clock of the Westertoren, only the clock is on it, not the whole tower. There is a separate picture of the whole tower. Also a picture of the flower canal and some more buildings.
However, it can be even more worldly with van Moerkerken, such as a Propaganda assistant, which is different from a traditional nurse or teacher in training. This is certainly the case for the photo of Cannes, from 1960, with a woman posing in a swimming costume by the sea. It can even be even bleaker with this photographer, an example is a woman in a swimming costume near the Nieuwe Meer lake in Amsterdam, or that of Tilly L., a woman lying completely naked forward, taken from the back, only the buttocks are partly visible. These are even more visible in another photograph, with the name Lena M.
It goes even further with the picture of three ladies, only the vaginas are in the picture. A very progressive photographer who started very classically, with assistants and waitresses.
Even more black and white
It is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. A.J. Bonda also contributed a lot to these records, from the 1920s. Just like a previous photographer, these are also mainly about the beach, there are various photographs of Bergen aan Zee, in which aspects of the beach, the chairs, the paths to it and the people who go or are in it, are discussed.
Bonda has also made other probing images, which deal with more serious matters. These come up after all the light-hearted or relaxing scenes. Several pictures of German internment depots, not in the second world war, but in the first, because Bonda died in 1928. This also applies to the photo of a German with ladies in the woods.
Therefore, be original and switch to black and white, they are all equally captivating!
